Server Room Reorganization PDF Print E-mail

Alonso Consulting was asked by a client to organize and restructure their server room. Prior to our work, the server room had degraded to a point where it was almost impossible to access devices or perform any work easily. The room was filled with old useless equipment that was no longer in use. The server cabinet and patch panel had wires going in every direction and hardware devices were haphazardly placed around the room. Below are photos of the room before work began.

To accomplish our goal of reorganizing and creating a workable space, we began by removing all equipment no longer in use. We then installed shelving for various hardware devices, and a new patch panel with new patch cables. With the shelving in place, we were able to organize many devices previously scattered throughout the room. In the server cabinet we installed cable management panels to reroute all network and power cables, replaced multiple power strips with an APC unit designed for the cabinet and labeled all servers. To clean up the floor so you could work in the back of the server cabinet, we removed unused cables and installed mats designed for cable management. The following pictures show the room after work was completed.

The end result of the project was a well organized and functional server room. All hardware devices are now accessible, all patch panel jacks and servers are labeled, the switches, routers and modems are easily accessible and the server cabinet is much easier to stand behind and work in.
